Did You Know...
1) A periodontist is a dental specialist who treats the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, roots and bone. Diagnosis is very important to us, and emphasis is placed on prevention. Our job is to recognize disease, determine if it is advancing and then stop its progression so you don’t lose your teeth. If you’ve already lost teeth, we can help plan, place and maintain dental implant replacements.

2) What factors can cause gum disease?
Stress, tobacco, inadequate home dental care, pregnancy, bacterial contamination, clenching, grinding, certain medications and diabetes.

3) For years, we’ve known that smoking, drinking alcohol and drug use can all place the newborn at risk. However, a new risk factor has surfaced — periodontal disease — which apparently is related to premature, low birth weight babies. Research has shown that pregnant women who have gum infection may be seven times more likely to have a baby born too small or too early.
